Healthscope to build and run new Northern Beaches Hospital

The new facility will be built on 6.5 hectares in Frenchs Forest. NSW Premier and Member for Manly Mike Baird said the hospital will be the first built on a greenfield site in Sydney in 20 years, and will deliver the best possible care to public and private patients.

“The people of the Northern Beaches have been waiting decades for this hospital to get off the ground and today the NSW Government is delivering,” Mr Baird said.

The new hospital will feature:

  • A 50-space emergency department – an increase on the total 30 spaces that currently exist in Manly and Mona Vale Hospitals.
  • 14 operating theatres and six surgical suites.
  • Advanced intensive care and critical care units.
  • A modern inpatient mental health facility.

The Premier revealed that Heathscope’s proposal for a modern, 9-storey hospital will contain 488 beds, 1,400 car spaces and a helipad.

The project is valued at around $1 billion, including $400 million in road upgrades set to be completed before doors open in 2018. In an economic boost to the region, around 700 new jobs will be created during the construction of the new facility. Construction is due to begin in early 2015.

The Northern Sydney Local Health District will enter into a partnership with Healthscope to provide public patient services over the next 20 years. Under the agreement, Healthscope will have to meet stringent Australian quality and safety healthcare standards.

Member for Wakehurst Brad Hazzard said “This is bigger than Ben Hur for the Northern Beaches. We have been waiting for a long while to get our new hospital – and this makes it clear our day has come.”
