Western Sydney’s $5.3bn airport takes off

Sydney’s second airport at Badgerys Creek has reached a major milestone, with contracts awarded to Lend Lease and CPB Contractors to start levelling the site by the end of the year.

The ‘Early Earthworks’ contract will employ up to 180 workers to undertake site preparation, which also includes building the access roads and drainage required to enable major construction to commence in 2019.

The major contract for overseeing construction of the $5.3 billion project has been awarded to Bechtel, which recently delivered high-profile upgrades to Dubai, Hong Kong and London airports.

“These contracts will deliver real economic benefits for Western Sydney and are further evidence of the tremendous progress being made on this once-in-a-generation project,” said Assistant Minister for Finance David Coleman.

“Western Sydney Airport will be a catalyst for growth in the region and it’s great to see that starting now, generating more local jobs, even at this early stage in the project.”

New Parramatta to Western Sydney Airport rail link

Billions of dollars have already been committed to major rail projects including the headline ‘Sydney Metro’ which is one of the country’s largest and most ambitious transport infrastructure initiatives.

Sydney Metro West is the next rail project, which will link Paramatta directly with the CBD via an underground metro railway.

As an extension to this project, the Government has also noted potential rail corridors and train link investigation paths which see the Sydney Metro West project extended from Parramatta to the new Western Sydney Airport.

$7bn North South Rail Link

Both Federal and NSW Governments have stated their joint objective of having rail connected to the Western Sydney Airport in time for the opening of the airport in 2026, and have also committed to a further $3.6 billion to upgrade and build new roads around airport.

With the Western Parklands City population expected to hit 1 million by 2031, developing the area’s infrastructure is a key priority for both Governments. And while the airport project has been talked about for decades, Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities, Paul Fletcher, says it’s now a reality.

“Western Sydney Airport will transform Western Sydney, creating thousands of jobs and encouraging economic growth and investment in the region,” he said.
