Adelaide Oval parkland improvements set to begin

With the end of the overwhelmingly successful 2014 football season work will now commence on revitalising the parklands surrounding Adelaide Oval.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan said the landscape works will underline Adelaide Oval’s unique parklands setting with improved and attractive public spaces.

“The proposed design and scope of works are very impressive and have been established in collaboration with the Adelaide City Council and the Stadium Management Authority,” Mr Mullighan said.

“As the main stadium works are now complete and the football season is coming to an end, we can focus on improving the areas surrounding Adelaide Oval and making them more usable and attractive for the community and visitors to the city to enjoy.

“Initial works in Creswell Gardens were completed in time for the stadium opening in March this year and helped to create an attractive entry plaza to the Eastern Stand by incorporating large growing trees, park furniture and improved pedestrian connections.”

The $9 million in further works will include:

  • improved levels and drainage, and reinstating memorials, statues and minor landscape features affected by the redevelopment works in Pennington Gardens
  • relocation and restoration of the Creswell fountain
  • improved connectivity of pedestrian and cycle paths access routes from North Adelaide
  • upgraded lighting to meet Australian Standards
  • new paving and landscaping of Fig Tree Plaza
  • extensive large tree planting in character with the parklands
  • car-parking adjacent to the northern entry for use by those with a disability and all-weather car-parking as part of the reconstruction of Pennington Lane
  • improved drainage, new irrigation utilising GAP recycled water, and returfing of northern hill area
  • provision of a vehicle exit from Adelaide Oval No.2 onto Montefiore Road.

Site construction activities are scheduled to commence in October this year and be completed in mid-2015 to ensure minimum disruption to upcoming events including the Cricket World Cup.
