Key unlocks next stage of Midland hospital

  • Construction of the St John of God Midland Public Hospital is now complete
  • State Government hands key to St John of God to start clinical commissioning
  • Hospital to open its doors to patients from November 24, 2015
  • Project jointly funded by State and Australian governments

The $360 million St John of God Midland Public Hospital (SJGMPH), jointly funded by the State and Australian governments, reached a significant milestone today with Brookfield Multiplex completing construction and handing the key to the State Government.

Health Minister Kim Hames said the completion of the project on time and on budget was a sign of a successful partnership and he was pleased to now hand the key over to St John of God Health Care to begin clinical commissioning of the hospital.

“It’s terrific to see the progress of the hospital and what a significant addition it will be to Midland and the surrounding area, which hasn’t had a new hospital in 50 years,” Dr Hames said.

“The new 307-bed public hospital will offer a greater range of healthcare services to people in Perth’s north-eastern corridor and the Wheatbelt, increasing capacity by about 50 per cent.

“When it opens in late November, the St John of God Midland Public Hospital will offer a comprehensive range of general hospital services free of charge to public patients.”

The Minister said the new facility would replace the ageing Swan District Hospital and would include a significantly expanded emergency department, advanced high-dependency and coronary units, improved cardiology services and a new cancer care facility.

The hospital will also provide larger maternity, general surgery, mental health and rehabilitation facilities than currently available at Swan District Hospital, as well as improved aged care, renal and palliative care services.

The State Government has partnered with St John of God to design, build and operate the public hospital, which is estimated will deliver free public health care to about 60,000 emergency patients, 29,000 inpatients and more than 100,000 outpatients in its first year of operation.

The State and Australian governments each contributed $180 million to the project.
