$80 million Brickworks Marketplace development officially opened

Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis today officially opened the new $80 million Brickworks Marketplace development in Torrensville, which will provide ongoing employment for more than 600 South Australians.

The 17,000 sq m Marketplace includes a Woolworths supermarket, Big W and Dan Murphy’s as well as more than 40 speciality shops and 700 on-grade car parks.

“This major investment in Adelaide’s inner western suburbs has created more than 800 jobs, including 200 jobs during construction and more than 600 ongoing retail positions,” Mr Koutsantonis said.

“It’s a magnificent win for this area – giving local residents more choice and giving young people more job opportunities.

“We look forward to further private sector investment just like this in South Australia.

“The State Government’s tax reforms, which include phasing out stamp duty on non-residential property from 1 July 2016, will provide added incentive for companies to invest in developments like these.”

Construction began on the site, formerly home to the J. Hallett & Sons brickworks operation, in April last year after more than two years of planning.

Adelaide-based BADGE Construction won the contract to build the development, engaging with more than 80 local subcontractors during the course of the project.

Woolworths State Operations Manager Michelle White said the development has brought significant investment to the local area.

”We are delighted the new $80 million Brickworks Marketplace has created hundreds of jobs from the moment construction began and will continue to support an ongoing retail workforce with more than 600 jobs,” Ms White said.

”Local residents will now have easy access to great retailers in a major shopping destination and community space.”

Mr Koutsantonis said access to the development has been greatly improved by the State and Federal governments’ $10 million upgrade of the South Road and Ashwin Parade intersection, which was the first part of the Torrens to Torrens upgrade of South Road.

“These works included installing a roundabout into the main entrance of the Marketplace development,” he said.
