Brisbane’s $38 million Bicentennial Bikeway upgrade complete

Brisbane City Council last week announced it has completed the final stage of the $38.16 million Bicentennial Bikeway upgrade from the CBD to Toowong, which has been progressively completed since 2009.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the $10 million Stage 4 of the Bicentennial Bikeway was the last of seven projects to upgrade and extend the 2.7 kilometre bikeway and create better connections to other areas of Toowong, Milton and Auchenflower.

“With the opening of this 550 metre, Stage 4 section between Land Street and Sylvan Road, cyclists can now travel along off-road bikeways all the way from Toowong to New Farm,” Cr Quirk said.

“Running along the Brisbane River and connecting the CBD to Toowong, the Bicentennial Bikeway is a key link in our city’s active transport network and carries up to 6500 pedestrians and cyclists daily, making it Brisbane’s busiest cycle and pedestrian pathway.

“Council is committed to improving safety and connectivity for the city’s cyclists, walkers and runners and the fully upgraded Bicentennial Bikeway provides separated pedestrian and cyclist movements from Toowong through to the William Jolly Bridge in the CBD, greatly enhancing access and safety along a distance of approximately 2.7 kilometres.

“The completion of this upgrade will further enhance active lifestyle options for the community, with the potential to safely walk, run or cycle from Toowong to the CBD, connect to the City Reach Boardwalk and continue to New Farm via the Riverwalk – a distance of approximately 8.5 kilometres.

“Residents can also walk, run or cycle to Kangaroo Point and the South Bank Parklands from the Bicentennial Bikeway via the Go Between Bridge or The Goodwill Bridge – a distance of approximately six kilometres.”

Member for Mount Coot-tha Steven Miles said the final stage of the Bicentennial Bikeway upgrade would be a welcome improvement for locals who enjoy cycling to work or for leisure.

“The State Government has supported this project since 2007, investing $16.84 million towards the Bicentennial Bikeway upgrade,” Dr Miles said.

“This is part of our commitment to working with Local Government to provide safe and connected cycling facilities in South East Queensland.”

Cr Quirk said the final stage of works from Land Street to west of the Regatta Ferry Terminal commenced in April 2014 and included the provision of a separated 3.5 metre wide cyclist path and a two metre wide pedestrian path along this section at a cost of $9.82 million.

“The final stage of works was undertaken in conjunction with the Regatta ferry terminal upgrade, with a further $2.95 million invested to construct a new waiting and viewing platform and access ramp for the terminal which is fully accessible and compliant with disability legislation,” he said.

The project is part of the Lord Mayor’s commitment to provide $120 million in new bikeway infrastructure over four years as part of the Better Bikeways 4 Brisbane program.
