Comment sought for Scarborough transformation
- Foreshore to be transformed into a contemporary, family friendly destination
- New and improved beach facilities and infrastructure
- Flexible planning system to encourage investment and development of key sites
Premier Colin Barnett today released the draft Scarborough Master Plan for public comment, proposing a $57.4 million redevelopment starting this year to provide more housing, a water playground, a park with skate facilities, community and function centre, new cafes, restaurants, kiosks and public art.
“The community told us they wanted to get closer to the beach and the new-look Scarborough will do just that,” Mr Barnett said.
“This will build on the area’s identity and provide visitors with an active foreshore that people of all ages can enjoy all year round.”
New lookouts, decking and boardwalks will enable better access to the beach while family friendly areas will provide green spaces, playgrounds, alfresco dining and event spaces.
“This unlocks Scarborough’s potential as a great place to live, visit and work,” the Premier said.
The new beach facilities and infrastructure improvements include high-quality showers and restrooms, more shade, seating, and opportunities for deck chair, umbrella and surfboard hire.
Planning Minister John Day said the draft master plan outlined a vision to encourage private investment and development within the 100 hectare redevelopment area.
“We are looking for high quality developments that support the character of the area and enhance amenities for both residents and visitors,” Mr Day said.
“The plan encourages mixed-use development, increased density in appropriate areas and a range of accommodation options. More than 2,800 new dwellings and 26,000sqm of office and retail space is expected to be created in the area.”
The draft master plan builds on early work by the City of Stirling and extensive stakeholder and community feedback, including 3,000 public submissions from an online survey.
