New Riverside community for eastside precinct

  • Plans revealed for the Waterbank project adjacent to the Causeway
  • Construction of the public spaces due to start mid-2016

The transformation of the city’s eastside precinct has taken another step forward with the lodgement of the first development application for the six hectare, nine-lot Waterbank project.

The first proposed building is a 32-storey residential tower valued at $116 million.  It will include about 260 apartments and town houses, with food and beverage outlets on the ground floor overlooking the Swan River.

Premier Colin Barnett said Waterbank would be a fantastic area for West Australians to enjoy with a public beach on the river, boardwalks, parkland areas, public art, and barbecue and picnic facilities.

“The State Government is investing in the redevelopment of the city’s eastside precinct including the 40 hectare Riverside project and the development of the new Perth Stadium, pedestrian bridge and associated public transport infrastructure,” Mr Barnett said.

“It is all part of a co-ordinated plan to create new inner-city communities where people want to live and work, providing housing diversity to accommodate a population of 3.5 million by 2050.”

Waterbank is expected to generate 440 jobs during construction, as well as provide up to 1,000 residential dwellings for 1,500 residents, 35,500 square metres of commercial and retail space and a range of community facilities.

Planning Minister John Day said the Waterbank site had undergone extensive remediation works in preparation for construction to start in mid-2016.

“Extensive works have paved the way for new public open space to be created right on the water’s edge, providing more opportunities for the eastern side of our city to connect with the Swan River,” Mr Day said.

The first development application for Waterbank will be advertised for public comment by the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority in the coming weeks.

The eastside precinct is expected to accommodate 16,500 homes for 27,000 residents within 15 years and will be transformed into a vibrant area for entertainment, recreation, retail and commercial.  It includes:


  • 40ha development incorporating Waterbank, Queens Riverside and the former Chemistry Centre site
  • 4,000 homes for 7,000 people, 94,000sqm of commercial and retail space for 6,000 workers
  • Public beach, retail, entertainment and recreation opportunities.

Burswood Peninsula

  • 12,500 homes and 20,000 residents

New Perth Stadium

  • Five-level, 60,000-seat stadium on schedule to open for the start of the 2018 AFL season.

East Perth Power Station

  • 8.5ha site to provide a mix of living, working and leisure opportunities while conserving the power station building.

East Perth train station

  • Potential to develop commercial space and a multi-storey car park next to the station.

Claisebrook Village

  • Work started in 1992 and covers 137.5ha
  • Home to 1,450 dwellings, 2,500 residents, 6,000 health, education and media workers and 1,500 Central campus students.
