Preferred bidder named for State’s new museum
Brookfield Multiplex preferred respondent with architects OMA and Hassell
New museum on track to open in 2020
The contract to design and build Western Australia’s new museum in Perth has reached an important milestone, with the State Government entering into exclusive negotiations with Brookfield Multiplex and international architects OMA and Hassell.
Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said the Government had been impressed by the responses received from the three world-class consortia shortlisted for the project.
“The substantial international response highlights project’s prestige,” Mr Day said.
“Brookfield Multiplex has extensive experience in delivering major projects, while OMA and its principal, Rem Koolhaas, are well-known for creating dramatic architecture. Hassell has also developed a considerable international reputation.
“OMA has a vast portfolio of international projects including the expansion of Musee national des beaux-arts du Quebec, the Seattle Public Library and the China Central Television Building in Beijing. Hassell has completed many projects in China, but is best known to Australian audiences for projects such as the redevelopment of Melbourne’s Flinders Street Station and Sydney’s Darling Harbour.”
Treasurer Mike Nahan said following approval of Brookfield Multiplex as the preferred respondent, the Government would now enter into exclusive negotiations in order to reach final agreement on the design, construction and programming of the project.
“The Government received eight responses to the original expression of interest and the three shortlisted consortia spent several months developing proposals and concepts to provide WA with an exceptional museum for the 21st century,” Dr Nahan said.
“The successful design will be released once the contract has been awarded, which is expected in mid-2016.”
The Treasurer said the Government had also approved a consortium led by Doric, with French architects Ateliers Jean Nouvel, as the reserve respondent in the event that negotiations cannot be successfully concluded with Brookfield Multiplex.
