Our State Budget 2016-17: Investing in infrastructure to grow the State – Scarborough foreshore set for transformation

The State Government has committed an extra $18 million in the 2016-17 State Budget to transform the Scarborough Beach foreshore into one of Australia’s best beachfronts and tourism hotspots.
Planning Minister Donna Faragher said the Government, in collaboration with the City of Stirling would invest nearly $75.4 million over the next three years into reshaping the iconic coastal landmark into an exciting, world-class tourist destination.
“Scarborough Beach is well recognised locally, nationally and internationally for its beauty, surf and sunsets,” she said.
“The Government, through the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority and in partnership with the City of Stirling, are working together to revitalise Scarborough Beach.
- We will draw on its unique identity to create a vibrant hub of activity with facilities, events and activities and enhance its reputation as a great meeting place for families and people of all ages.”
Mrs Faragher said a contract would soon be awarded to start forward works at Scarborough Beach, including excavation works ahead of construction of a waterfront swimming pool to be built by the City of Stirling.
Other works will include construction of temporary facilities and the relocation of the Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club (SSLSC) to those facilities, reconfiguration of car parks and removal of a small section of man-made sand dunes.
The existing surf club building and Maureen Grierson Centre will be demolished and replaced with a new Beach Hub which will host the SSLSC, the city’s beach services and other community uses.
“While access to the beachfront will be impacted for some time, initial earthworks have been scheduled during the quieter winter months, in an effort to minimise disruption to the local community,” Mrs Faragher said.
Further public comment from residents, business owners and the broader community will be sought over forthcoming weeks on the final public domain elements of the proposed Scarborough revitalisation project.
These elements will include creation of several new destinations, including:
- Scarborough Square – the heart of the redevelopment surrounded by cafes, restaurants and shops
- Sunset Hill – a sloping hill offering scenic views over the ocean with rolling access to the beach, new promenades and nature-based activities spaces
- Beach Hub – offering a mix of recreational and retail spaces for the community to enjoy, including the SSLSC and the City of Stirling’s beach service facilities
- Intergenerational Plaza – a multi-use space for sports activities and events featuring a skate park, climbing wall and half-court basketball area
- Transit Hub – the central landscaped entry point to Scarborough.
