Celebrating Property Investors: How every Investment helps build a Nation

The property market in Australia is worth over $9.7 trillion, which is four times the size of Australia’s GDP. When you purchase a property, you create a ripple effect of opportunity that resonates in so many industries and keeps millions of people employed.

It’s somewhat startling to me just how many myths and misconceptions there are surrounding property investors, with a lot of divided opinions about the impact a property investor makes on the housing market, and the community as a whole.

Obviously, this is a topic I’m extremely passionate about, having dedicated most of my life to helping people from all walks of life understand the benefit of using property investing as a means to achieving long term wealth and financial freedom for their families.

Yes, there are the naysayers who demonise property investors, believing them to be greedy individuals who are just in it for the take, when the reality couldn’t be further from the truth.

More than just investing in bricks and mortar, when a person buys a property with a view to renting it out, they’re also investing in the economy and the future of Australia.

It’s important to understand what property investing truly means and the positive impact it can have on individuals, communities, and the economy as a whole.

So let’s explore what a property investor really does.

1. Property Investors create accessible housing for everyday Australians

Property investors are often unfairly singled out as the cause of housing unaffordability, higher tax revenue, high lending costs and rents when, in actuality, the opposite is true.

Look at it this way; if there were no private landlords, and we’re talking about average people who’ve decided to risk their own hard-earned money to invest in property, housing would need to be provided by Government or companies.

We are sitting in the middle of the worst rental crisis on record, and with population growth (including visitor and migrants) about to explode, it’s only going to get worse.

Property investors therefore play a crucial role in providing much-needed, accessible  housing options for families, renters, students, and visitors. This not only helps to address the issue of homelessness but also boosts the economy by creating a stable housing market and reducing the burden on public housing.

“A successful economy requires not just investment in knowledge, but investment in people.” – Elizabeth Warren

2. Property Investors create jobs for others and boost the economy

The property market in Australia is worth over $9.7 trillion, which is four times the size of Australia’s GDP. When you purchase a property, you create a ripple effect of opportunity that resonates in so many industries and keeps millions of people employed.

  • Building and construction: More than 1 million employees, supporting 321,596 firms and producing $162 billion in economic activity each year. This equates to one 10th of our total economic activity in an industry that generates $77billion in taxation nationally.
  • Real estate sector: The building, selling, buying and leasing of property contributes 1 in 4 jobs indirectly, and represents around 13% GDP.
  • 25+ related industries: From solicitors, auctioneers and mortgage brokers, to cleaners, tradespeople and property stylists, the buying and selling of property is a crucial component of keeping the Australian economy alive and stimulating growth.

“The greatest gift you can give to someone is your own personal development.” – Jim Rohn

3. Property Investors reduce the burden on the government to support them

I haven’t met many (if any) people happy about the prospect of working hard all their lives only to then find themselves be totally reliant on the government and pensions to fund what would be a very average retirement.

Property investors are by their very nature, progressive thinkers, motivated by a desire to take their future into their own hands. They are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve a lifestyle that allows them to live their dreams well into retirement without the burden of financial stress hanging over their heads. It takes guts, determination and drive to walk the path of a property investor, and while they will reap rewards, as self-funded retirees they should also be celebrated for everything they have sacrificed along the way.

Investing in yourself is the best investment you will ever make. It will not only improve your life, it will improve the lives of all those around you.” – Robin S. Sharma

4. Property Investors inspire and empower others

You might be surprised to know that despite Australia’s insatiable obsession with real estate, most households don’t actually own an investment property. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ survey of income and housing, 4-5 households don’t invest in property at all. Of those that do, many only own one property, still hold a mortgage and are still working.

While it’s true they are more likely to be high income earners, it’s a far cry from the picture the media like to create of mega-rich property moguls rolling in cash. The point is, these are ordinary, everyday Australians who have risen above the negative property click-bait, done their homework and importantly, taken action.

It’s people like this, people who empower themselves to strive for a better life, that inspire others to do the same. And just like all of us at Ironfish, those who have succeeded in property investing often want to share their stories, lessons, and guidance with others. By being an example and a source of expertise, property investors can motivate others to take the leap and start investing in property of their own.

No matter what your dream or your income level, if you’re ready to take your future into own hands and experience the positive effects of property investing, we’re here to help navigate you through every twist and turn.
