$2.8billion for new train fleet

Train travellers will experience a more comfortable ride as a new $2.8 billion fleet of intercity trains comes into service from 2019. 

The fleet will deliver more jobs and comfort in terms of seating, luggage compartments and for the first time air conditioning in all state train carriages.

The fleet will include around 65 new trains, about 520 carriages, and will carry passengers from Sydney to the Central Coast, Newcastle, Blue Mountains and Illawarra.

Sydney-siders will also benefit because the new trains will stop at many busy city interchanges like Central and Strathfield.

Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian said the NSW Government would begin procuring the new trains this month.

“These new trains will provide unprecedented levels of comfort and convenience for customers, and we will now begin industry briefings and community engagement to achieve the best outcome from the new fleet,” she said.

The government will work with world leading train manufacturers to identify the best trains for long distance journeys.

The first train will be in service by 2019, with the rest of the fleet being progressively rolled out through to 2024.
