The Clock is ticking… How have you gone in your first 45 days of 2025?

Happy (Chinese) New Year and my heartfelt wishes go out to you and your loved ones for joy, prosperity, and success in 2025 – the year of the Snake!

Chinese NY arrived earlier than usual in January 2025, and whether you celebrate it or not, its arrival is a timely reminder that the clock of life is ticking as strongly as ever in 2025!  It is also the perfect time to check in and review what you have achieved in your first 45 days of this year? If you are like most people we speak to, they want 2025 to be better and different to 2024! However, unless you have some clear goals and stay committed to them, I am afraid all you will get will be “more of 2024”. Here comes the good news, it’s not too late to make a start.

Our clients frequently reach out to me at this time of year, and I always offer them encouragement because I know that no one’s journey is easy and having the right mindset is key to your ultimate success.

What has helped me and many others tremendously in reaching aspirations is maintaining quality and trusted experts around you. Those who can inspire, support and mentor you towards your goals are an invaluable asset in your investment journey.

I was mentored through my first 7 investment property purchases, starting back in 1998 and I would not hold my current portfolio without receiving this initial guidance. Today I am privileged to spend time with our long-term customers and hear firsthand about the positive impact that many have experienced through building and holding a property portfolio long enough for it to significantly change their lives.

Many of you have expressed interest in learning more about my investment journey, what I’ve learned in business and in life, and how I’ve helped individuals achieve growth and success both inside and outside of property.

This has prompted me to think more about one of my goals for 2025, which is to add value to our investor community and share inspiration and with a wider audience.

So 2025 marks the beginning of a new series of personal communications from me, aiming to enrich your investment path, build your confidence and determination in your wealth and life goals.

Today, I’ll discuss two important topics for Investor Success, Goal Setting and Strategy.

Goals

I spoke about Goals in January but be honest… have you actually set your wealth goals for 2025? Did you do it? Have you made any firm New Year resolutions? Setting and writing down goals is vital because, without clear objectives, we risk working tirelessly without achieving tangible results. An interesting analogy I recently heard compares life without goals to a soccer game without any goals. Imagine 11 players chasing a ball around for 90 minutes without any score ever possible — energetic but fruitless. Similarly, throwing darts aimlessly at a wall may create holes but no meaningful result.

Many property investors enter the market without clear goals, making wealth accumulation a random endeavour rather than part of a structured life plan. Often driven by impulses or FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), or a mislaid DIY belief that they can do it on their own, but their efforts lack direction and even if they buy a property or two they inevitably fail to build a meaningful portfolio of 4+ properties and hold them long enough. What a waste…

Embarking on the property investment journey requires well-defined goals to succeed. You’ll only be effective if you commit to clear objectives, including when you plan to reap your rewards and how much passive income you’ll need to support a financially free lifestyle. With meaningful, focused goals, not only does your likelihood of success increase, but the investment journey also becomes more manageable, even amidst the inevitable challenges and setbacks – and trust me, there will be many of these along the way. With the right planning, strategies and people in place though – all challenges can be overcome – plus the journey is a lot more fun!

When starting my property journey 26 years ago, I was lucky to start with an unconditional goal of building a passive income stream over a 10–15-year period. Though my accountant, stockbroker and well-intended friends tried to dissuade me, I was so committed to my family’s financial freedom that I made a conscious decision to listen to the person who had the results I was seeking.  My mentor assured me that my goals were achievable, and he was willing to help introduce me to the right people and to help me get there.

Sure enough, once I started the journey and got results along the way, the naysayers gradually faded away and I started attracting more and more people who could and would help me. Remember the saying “When you are going for your goal, the world will make way for you”? Strategy

When it comes to property investment, there are so many ways you can do this, and it can be simply overwhelming for investors to know which strategies to consider and where to start. The most common ones include a classic DIY (Do It Yourself) approach, targeting high yielding regional properties, renovating older properties to add value, building granny flats, and venturing into property development – all of which can reap results but also have numerous pitfalls and drawbacks to navigate.

The reality is that almost any strategy can succeed depending on the individual’s interests, skills, preferences, resources, and attitude towards time and money. But you need to focus and decide on what strategy to commit to as having multiple focuses rarely ever works.

So, what’s your investment strategy? My personal strategy – I made the conscious choice to be a Passive Investor and seek out the leverage and support of a team of experts around me taking care of the details and day to day work. This then allowed me to focus on my other strategic wealth focus (and passion) and that is to be an “Active Income Expander”. Yep, I wanted to build a large property portfolio, but I wanted to be passive so that I could focus my personal time and energy on actively increasing my income.

At the beginning of my journey, my mentor offered me valuable advice: “Joseph, your most precious commodity is your time. Time is money, and time is your life.” That insight prompted me to craft a strategy that leverages other people’s money (through the bank), expertise (from my mentor and a property specialist), and time. I opted to let others handle the groundwork needed to build my property assets and secure future passive income. Meanwhile, I concentrated my efforts on increasing my active income.

I understood that to build my portfolio and achieve financial freedom within a reasonable timeframe, I needed to boost my income. This approach would enable me to invest more and faster while enjoying a good lifestyle for myself and my family.

This strategy proved highly effective for me. With the exciting prospect of financial freedom and a shift in mindset, I significantly increased my value in the marketplace. Consequently, my income rose multi-fold, allowing me to build an initial multi-million-dollar portfolio within just seven years. I continued expanding that portfolio across many cities in Australia, enrolled my children in excellent schools, and enhanced my family’s lifestyle.

One of the critical aspects of my strategy was leveraging other people’s expertise and resources. By working with knowledgeable mentors and property specialists, I was able to make informed decisions, avoid common pitfalls, and accelerate my journey towards financial freedom. This approach saved me time and allowed me to focus on expanding my active income streams and enjoying family life.

In conclusion, committing to clear investment goals, setting the right strategy, and working diligently (and wisely) to increase your income can help you achieve your wealth goals more certainly and quickly. This approach has been phenomenally successful for me and in the coming weeks and months I will be sharing more about how I doubled and then kept increasing my income, and how you can do the same too!
