Consultation report released for M12 Motorway route options and The Northern Road Upgrade Stage 4

A report has been released detailing stakeholder and community feedback for the proposed M12 Motorway and The Northern Road Upgrade Stage 4, which could deliver more road projects and transform road connections for western Sydney.

“The $3.6 billion Australian and NSW Government funded Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan is helping to deliver essential road improvements before the new airport opens at Badgerys Creek in the mid 20s,” A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said.

“Community feedback was invited earlier this year on the shortlisted route options for the M12 Motorway which will provide a new connection between the M7 Motorway at Cecil Hills and The Northern Road at Luddenham, with direct access to the new airport.

“Feedback was also sought on Stage 4 of the $1.6 billion The Northern Road Upgrade. The 11km upgrade between Mersey Road, Bringelly and Littlefields Road, Luddenham will widen and realign The Northern Road around the airport and Luddenham village.

“More than 150 submissions were received for both projects which will be progressively rolled out in the next 10 years ensuring the road infrastructure needed is built ahead of the predicted population growth.

“Feedback was received on a range of issues including property acquisition and access, impacts for local businesses, traffic management and the potential impacts for the surrounding road network during construction.

“All comments received from stakeholders and the community will be considered and help progress planning for these projects, including the selection of the preferred route corridor for the M12 Motorway which is expected to be announced mid-year.

“Once built, the M12 Motorway will have capacity for up to six lanes with interchanges at The Northern Road, the new airport at Badgerys Creek and the M7 Motorway, and would feature an off road shared path for pedestrians and cyclists.

“With work already under way on Bringelly Road, The Northern Road and Werrington Arterial Road the NSW Government is surging ahead with its program of work to provide increased road capacity to meet the needs of the growing population.”

Around 30 million fewer car trips annually in 2036.

  • A metro trip from Chatswood to Central will take just 15 minutes – 11 minutes faster than the existing suburban railway system.
  • New twin railway tunnels will be built, stretching 15.5km from Chatswood to Sydenham and more than 40m below the surface of Sydney Harbour.
  • A specialised tunnel boring machine combining two types of tunnelling technology will be required to deal with the unique ground conditions under Sydney Harbour.
  • More than 6,200 jobs created at the peak of construction in 2017-18.

The Metro extension under the Harbour into the city will take pressure off the congested Wynyard and Town Hall stations. Martin Place will also become a major interchange, where passengers can switch between lines to travel on different parts of the network.
