“Humanising high-rise” – next gen apartment design by Koichi Takada

Now, the Sydney-based architect is joining forces with another formidable industry leader. Aria Property Group is widely regarded as one of Australia’s best developers with a legacy of delivering multi-award-winning residential buildings and precincts.

For the last three years running, Aria has won the national award for ‘best high-density development’ at the top industry awards run by the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA). This is the first time a developer has ever managed to achieve this feat.

Credited with the transformation of the inner Brisbane suburb and arts and cultural hub of South Brisbane, Aria has been raising the bar with each residential project.

Their newest South Brisbane apartment ‘Upper House’ continues this tradition, and this collaboration marks the first appearance of Takada’s work in Brisbane.

Location: South Brisbane at its best

Upper House will be just a short walk from the brand new Cultural Centre Metro Station, the Fish Lane dining precinct and situated within the heart of Brisbane’s arts and cultural hub, just a short walk from the Brisbane Convention Centre and QPAC (Queensland Performing Arts Centre).

With a new South Brisbane town square in planning, and the CBD also close by, Upper House residents will enjoy all the convenience of a contemporary urban lifestyle on Brisbane’s riverfront.

Bringing the outside in – high-rise for humans

Not content with simply designing a beautiful, distinctive and iconic piece of architectural ‘art,’ Koichi Takada together with Aria have sought to design luxury homes which emulate the natural environment as much as possible – optimising natural light and natural ventilation.

“What you often see in high-rise buildings anywhere in the world is the ‘box’ – a closed in space, completely artificial, air-conditioned. What we wanted to do was to bring the outside in. With 3-metre high ceilings, the ‘dancing balconies’ which give every apartment the corner apartment feel, warm materials, wooden floors throughout – all of this comes together to create a welcoming space, designed for people and communities,” Mr Takada said.

The South Brisbane apartment will also feature Australia’s first double-story ‘rooftop club’ – two levels of exclusive resident’s facilities devoted to wellness and lifestyle. From pools and spa rooms akin to a 6-star resort, to a private bar complete with sommelier, offering a regular showcase of Australian wines.

“We really expect this building to appeal greatly to a range of people, but particularly downsizers, who value space, elegance, quality facilities and easy proximity to the art and cultural events nearby,” Aria Managing Director, Tim Forrester said.

Timing

With a continuing influx of interstate migrants to Brisbane, as well as a greatly reduced supply of Brisbane apartments, many analysts agree that Brisbane is well positioned in its market cycle.

By the time Upper House is completed (2022) many of Brisbane’s big-ticket infrastructure projects will be completed, or near complete – including the new Brisbane Metro which will commence operating in 2023 – all of which would benefit South Brisbane.
